Phillips, J.S., Mason, M.J. & Dixon, H. (2010) Middle ear instrument nomenclature: a taxonomic approach. British Medical Journal 341: 1306-1308.

This paper addresses the vitally important question of whether "crocodile forceps" or "alligator forceps" represents the correct term for the commonly-used surgical instrument. Our analysis was based upon the principles of taxonomy – a literature search to find the first published term (post-Linnaeus), thereby establishing priority, followed by a morphological comparison of jaw structure with crocodiles and alligators from Museum collections in order to see whether genus can viably be transferred. The results were surprising and could revolutionize the terminology of these forceps.
