In this paper, we review the structure and function of the frog middle and inner ears, going on to use original and published measurements of group delays in the frog ear to calculate the major components of experimentally-measured delays from stimulus frequency otoacoustic emission (SFOAE) studies of the basilar papilla. We conclude that these transmission delays can be accounted for almost entirely by assuming that they result from forward and reverse transmission through the middle ear, together with a mechanical delay due to tectorial membrane filtering. Propagation through the inner ear fluids is assumed to occur via fast, longitudinal pressure waves, with negligible delay. Comparisons are made with similar measurements from the mammalian ear, and functional similarities are highlighted.
